Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov from his post, in the context of the latest cabinet reshuffle witnessed by the Ukrainian government in mid-July.
The minister posted the article on his social media accounts, noting that his tenure as minister lasted only six months.
The same news sources explained that the decision to dismiss came after intensive meetings and increasing pressure associated with the existence of fundamental differences and divergence in views between Minister Fedorov and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrsky.
The main points of contention centered on the plans for the administrative reform of the military establishment, the mechanism of the Ministry of Defence, as well as the file of mobilization, recruitment and the provision of manpower to the fronts. Observers described these tensions to Euronews as an administrative and intellectual clash between two generations: the first represents the start-up and young technological innovation ideology of Fedorov, as opposed to the rigid traditional military ideology represented by General Syrsky.
Declared Military Achievements and Angry Public Reactions
In his farewell statement, the sacked minister reviewed what he considered to be his team's most prominent military successes on the ground over the past six months, including paralyzing the ability of Russian forces to use Starlink communications systems, and launching focused and intensive military campaigns targeting Russian military supply lines and positions in Crimea, battles that resulted in deaths among Russian forces and the destruction of vital facilities.
Ukrainian news sources confirmed that the decision to dismiss faced a massive wave of sharp criticism and widespread societal indignation in the Ukrainian street and civil society circles, as social media platforms circulated widespread calls to organize mass peaceful demonstrations in the capital Kyiv today, with the aim of expressing to the Ukrainian presidency the refusal to replace the administratively active ministers with names described as achieving political consensus only.
The government's expected alternative to the Ministry of Defense
Ukrainian sources indicated that the current Minister of Interior, Ihor Klymenko, is the most prominent figure and the main candidate to succeed Fedorov in the Department of Defense. Klymenko has a security background as he commanded the National Police of Ukraine from 2019 to 2023, before he was appointed interior minister following the death of his predecessor Denys Monastyrsky in a helicopter crash.
The approval of Klymenko's appointment to his new position as defense minister requires a vote of support and formal approval from the Ukrainian parliament during the upcoming sessions.
