With a complete Arab consensus. Nabil Fahmy elected Secretary-General of the Arab League

Arab foreign ministers have unanimously approved Egypt's candidacy of veteran diplomat Nabil Fahmy, former foreign minister, for the position of secretary-general of the Arab League.

The Arab foreign ministers' approval came during the work of the Arab League Council meeting at the ministerial level in its 165th ordinary session, which was held on Sunday via video conferencing, which discussed targeting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Arab countries that have been subjected to Iranian aggressions.

The term of the current Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expires in June 2026, and the new Secretary-General will assume his duties from July 2026, and the final ratification of the selection is expected to take place during the next Arab Summit.

Dr. Nabil Fahmy has a long diplomatic career spanning more than four decades, serving as Egypt's Foreign Minister from July 2013 to June 2014, and serving as Egypt's ambassador to Washington for nine years (1999-2008).

Fahmy has also held senior diplomatic posts in New York and London, and founded the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo, where he served as founding dean.

Fahmy is known for his high diplomatic competence and extensive experience in Middle East issues, international relations, and Arab national security. His candidacy comes at a sensitive stage that witnesses multiple regional challenges, making him a consensus candidate that enjoys wide acceptance in Arab circles.

This rapid Arab consensus is seen as evidence of a desire to strengthen Arab unity and activate the role of the League in addressing current challenges, while maintaining Egypt's diplomatic balance and historical status within the organization.
