On Sunday evening, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the start of additional strikes against Iran, claiming that they are aimed at "weakening" Tehran's ability to "attack commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz."
CENTCOM said in a post on its account on the "X" platform, that "at 5 p.m. EDT today (21:00 GMT), U.S. Central Command forces began carrying out additional strikes against Iran."
It claimed that the strikes were aimed at "further weakening Iran's ability to attack civilian seafarers and commercial vessels that are transiting the Strait of Hormuz freely, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (President Donald Trump) has directed these strikes to hold Iranian forces accountable for their actions."
On the other hand, Iranian state media, including state television, reported that explosions were heard on Qeshm Island and the cities of Jask, Sirik and Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province, in the south of the country.
Iran's official news agency IRNA quoted Khuzestan Deputy Governor for Security and Law Enforcement Affairs, Valiollah Hayati, as saying, "Following the attack of the American enemy on Monday morning, one person was killed and four others were wounded."
Iran bombs US bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Monday morning that it had targeted US military sites and bases in Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait, according to Iranian state media.
Iran's official IRNA news agency quoted the IRGC as saying attacks targeted Jordan's Prince Hassan Air Base, a US drone command center in Bahrain and other air bases, including Ali al-Salem in Kuwait.
The Bahraini Ministry of Interior said via the "X" platform: "The siren has been sounded, and we ask citizens and residents to calm down, go to the nearest safe place, and follow the news through official channels."
The Kuwaiti army also announced that its armed forces confronted hostile air targets inside Kuwaiti airspace.
He said on the "X" platform: "The General Staff of the Army notes that the sounds of explosions, if heard, are the result of the interception of air defense systems to hostile attacks, and everyone is requested to abide by the security and safety instructions issued by the competent authorities."
Iran accuses Washington of aborting diplomacy
Iran strongly condemned late Sunday the recent US strikes on its territory, accusing Washington of "aborting" all diplomatic efforts over the past months to reduce tensions in the region, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.
Tehran accused the United States of blatantly "violating" all the terms of the memorandum of understanding signed in June, and of "causing a return to insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz and disrupting international commercial navigation," according to the statement.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the United States is violating almost all the terms of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries just 25 days ago, by launching attacks on Iran's transportation infrastructure.
In an official statement, the ministry said that the shelling hit a railway bridge in Khorasan province, which led to the suspension of train traffic, and described it as "the most heinous war crimes committed by Washington against the Iranian people."
The statement said that Iran, "adhering to its right to legitimate defense, will respond to any aggression of any level and magnitude, within the framework of international law," explaining that the United States "cannot achieve its goals through these terrorist attacks, because the Iranian people have proven throughout history their ability to withstand the strongest and most aggressive forces."
At the end of the statement, the Foreign Ministry stressed that "the continuation of the United States' aggression makes Iran not obligated to abide by the memorandum of understanding," stressing that Tehran will remain committed to the agreement as long as the other party abides by it, but will not accept violating its terms or "tolerating continued acts of aggression."
Iran asks UN to intervene
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei called on the United Nations to call on the Gulf states to stop providing their territory to the United States to launch strikes against Iranian territory.
In a post on the social media platform X, Baghaei addressed his words to Dujarric, commenting on the UN statement on the resumption of military actions between Washington and Tehran, as well as attacks on other countries in the Middle East.
Baghaei said Iran's strikes on US military bases and installations in the southern Gulf states represent a legitimate application of the "right to self-defence".
Baghaei added, "You (the United Nations) must urgently urge the countries concerned not to allow the United States to use its territory as bases for launching aggression against Iran."
Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of catastrophic consequences if hostilities between the United States and Iran resume.
