Two US soldiers missing in military exercises in Morocco

US forces lost two soldiers near the Cap Daraa area in the southern Moroccan province of Tantan, while participating in the  "African Lion 2026"  exercise, the largest multinational military exercise on the African continent, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced.

AFRICOM said in a statement on Sunday (May 3rd) that it is continuing to search with the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces for the two soldiers who went missing near a rocky cliff on Saturday, by various possible means, with an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.

The disappearance of the two US soldiers comes at a time when the Kingdom of Morocco is witnessing the 22nd  edition of the exercises, which will continue until May 8 with the participation of  41 countries, in which more than 8,000 soldiers are participating.

Although the exercises take place annually in complex training environments that include desert, mountainous and coastal areas, incidents of missing or injured remain rare, prompting Moroccan and U.S. authorities to harness considerable potential to search for the missing.

What are the  "African Lion" maneuvers?

The African Lion exercise is the largest and most important multinational military exercise on the African continent, having been launched in 2004 as a partnership between the US Africa Command and the Moroccan Armed Forces, before evolving into a large-scale annual event involving more than 40 countries and thousands of troops from Africa, Europe and America.

These exercises are being conducted in several countries, led by Morocco, along with Tunisia, Senegal and Ghana, and include integrated military exercises on land, air and sea, such as live-fire exercises, airdrops, and special forces operations, in addition to modern exercises in the fields of cybersecurity and multi-domain operations.

Accordingly, these exercises aim to raise combat readiness and enhance the ability to work together between armies, and confront security threats such as terrorism and regional crises, and the exercises  carry broader strategic dimensions, as they reflect the growing international military presence in Africa, and contribute to strengthening defense partnerships and supporting regional stability, making them a key platform for military coordination and security cooperation in the continent.

The exercises are witnessing actual Israeli participation, after being a mere symbolic presence or observation from behind the wall in previous years, to become a partner that bears the responsibility of carrying out joint military missions, in a step that consolidates Israel's military expansion deep in Africa.

Observers believe that this rapid shift in Israel's crossing to the forefront of the military event, armed with normalization agreements and benefiting from geopolitical tensions in the region, helps it impose itself as an influential party.

This direct engagement not only raises questions about the nature of the tasks entrusted to the Israeli side, but also redefines the alliances of the security zone under the umbrella of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), at a time when the atmosphere is being prepared to accept Israel's escalating role as a fait accompli, regardless of the political and moral implications that such steps raise for the stability of the region.
