To revitalize e-commerce. Telecom Moves to Regulate "Communication Platforms"

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Abdel Salam Heikal, revealed that the ministry is moving to regulate the work of social media platforms in cooperation with the concerned government agencies.

Minister Heikal explained in a statement today that analytical studies have shown that about 55 to 60 percent of the total internet traffic in Syria is done through these platforms, which he described as high compared to global averages, which necessitates the development of regulatory frameworks to ensure the maximum benefit from them and reduce their risks.

Economic and Social Dimensions

Heikal pointed out that social media platforms are no longer just tools for entertainment, but have become a key driver in revitalizing e-commerce by connecting innovators and producers directly to markets and consumers.

According to the minister, it also represents  a channel of community communication and a space for citizens to express their opinions and concerns, and serves as a bridge to convey demands and observations to government agencies.

Supporting Entrepreneurship and Startups

In a related context, the minister pointed out that these regulatory steps are integrated with the "National Agenda for Startups" launched by the ministry in mid-April.

The agenda aims to provide a stimulating legislative environment for the entrepreneurship sector, and to transform innovative ideas into concrete economic projects that contribute to creating new job opportunities for Syrian youth, through the coordination of efforts between various government and private sectors.
