Atef Naguib Trial

On Sunday, May 10, 2026, the Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus witnessed the second public session of the trial of the former regime's figures, where Atef Naguib appeared before the court to face heavy accusations of committing war crimes and widespread violations in Daraa in 2011.

At the beginning of the session, the judge announced that the fugitive defendants had been dismissed, led by Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher, and his former defense minister, Fahd al-Freij, in addition to a number of senior officers, and legal measures would be taken, including stripping them of their civil rights and putting their money under the administration of the state.

The judge addressed Najib directly, accusing him of leading systematic repression that included torturing children, arresting school students, storming a mosque, deploying snipers to target demonstrators, and preventing the wounded from being treated.

The court set the 10th of next month as the date for the third hearing, amid expectations that other defendants, including Wassim al-Assad and a number of pilots accused of genocide, will appear.
