The Ministry of Energy raises the prices of oil derivatives by up to 30%

The Ministry of Energy has issued a decision to raise the prices of hydrocarbons in Syria starting today, Thursday, May 7, 2026, at rates ranging between 17% and 30% depending on the type of derivative, within the framework of the pricing policy related to the fluctuations of the exchange rate and international prices.

The official bulletin showed that the price of the first liter of diesel was set at $0.88, 90-octane gasoline at $1.10, and 95-octane gasoline at $1.15. The price of a domestic gas cylinder reached $12.50, while the price of an industrial gas cylinder reached $20.

The bulletin included a parallel table of prices in Syrian pounds after calculating the dollar on the basis of 13,300 pounds, where the price of a liter of diesel oil was 117.04 pounds, gasoline 90 was 146.3 pounds, and gasoline 95 was priced at 152.95 pounds, while the price of domestic gas reached 1,662.5 pounds, and industrial gas was 2,660 pounds.

The new decision today comes to cancel the effects of the previous pricing announced by the Ministry of Energy on November 11, 2025, under Decree No. 731, which  it described at the time as part of a "comprehensive reform plan for the energy sector aimed at easing the burden of living with the onset of winter and increasing local production."

An inflationary wave is coming

The increase in fuel prices has opened a new wave of adjustments in transportation, goods and production costs, as the governorates have begun to prepare to issue updated bulletins for public and private transportation tariffs, with an increase expected to usually range between 20 and 25% to cover the difference in the price of diesel.

According to a report by Syrian News on the reality of the Syrian markets,  taxi fares are expected to rise faster, due to their direct dependence on high-octane gasoline, which has witnessed a clear increase, which will make the minimum order for any order higher than the capacity of a wide segment of consumers. The costs of shipping goods between governorates will also be affected, which means that the increase will be transferred to the prices of each item transported, from vegetables and fruits to food items.

The report indicated that the data indicate inevitable increases in food commodities, as the prices of vegetables and fruits are linked to the costs of irrigation and transportation, which is likely to increase between 10 and 15% in the coming days. The products of tourist ovens and pastries will also be affected by the increase in the prices of diesel and industrial gas, which has reached 266 thousand pounds per cylinder, which may push to raise the prices of tourist bread and other baked goods.

Together,  these developments have led to a new inflationary wave that will affect most aspects of daily life, as fuel is the main driver of supply chains and production, and any adjustment in its prices is automatically reflected in the overall economic activity.
