Syria achieves self-sufficiency  in wheat by mid-2027

The director of the Syrian Grains Corporation, Hassan Al-Othman, confirmed that official estimates are optimistic that Syria's needs for wheat will be secured until mid-2027, amid a relative improvement in expected production and the availability of stocks, which will enhance the stability of food supplies and reduce the need for imports.

Al-Othman explained in a statement to the Syrian Al-Thawra newspaper on Monday that the country's needs for wheat are estimated at about 2.5 million tons per year, while the currently available stock is about one million tons, taking into account the quantities received from the areas that have recently returned to state control, thus leaving a gap estimated at about 1.5 million tons that is expected to be covered through the production of the current season.

Al-Othman added that the Ministry of Agriculture's estimates indicate a production that may exceed 2.5 million tons, and the quantities expected to be marketed to the corporation may reach about 1.5 million tons in the worst case, which allows securing the country's needs for a period that extends until the middle of next year, with optimism for better agricultural seasons during 2026 and 2027.

An electronic platform for booking and receiving wheat for the 2026 season

On April 10, 2026, the  Syrian Grains Corporation announced the launch of an electronic platform for booking and receiving wheat for the 2026 season, with the aim of organizing and simplifying the receipt and purchase processes.

In a post on Facebook, the Corporation indicated that it continues to equip receiving centers in various governorates, and secure storage requirements according to the approved standards, in preparation for a wheat season that enhances strategic stocks and supports food security.

For his part, the General Manager of the Corporation, Hassan Al-Othman, indicated that the launch of the platform aims to facilitate procedures and support farmers, noting that field support teams will be present at the receiving centers to support them in completing the reservation, which contributes to speeding up the receiving process and raising the efficiency of performance.

Implementation of 86 % of the 2026 Agriculture Plan

Reports issued by the Syrian Ministry of Agriculture indicate that 86% of the wheat planting plan for the 2026 season has been implemented, recording a 92% jump in rainfed areas compared to last year.

The agricultural plan in Syria for the 2025-2026 season aims to cultivate 1.4 million hectares of wheat, with the implementation of 1.2 million hectares, i.e. 86%.

The country has 32 cement silos in various governorates, including the silos of the Eastern Province in Al-Hasakah and Deir Ezzor, where the implementation rate of the wheat cultivation plan has reached 70%, and production is expected to be abundant thanks to the heavy rainy season after years of drought.

Syrians consume 4.39 million bundles of bread daily, which need about 4500 tons of flour, as government bakeries produce 2.16 million bundles, while private bakeries produce 2.22 million bundles, and Aleppo ranks first in bread consumption due to its high population density, according to official statistics.

After the fall of the old regime, the new administration resorted to raising the price of a bundle of bread from 400 pounds to 4,000 pounds, in an attempt to reduce the bread subsidy bill, which it described as large, and in return, it increased the weight of loaves of bread.

Syria's Agricultural Strategy Extends to 2030

Syria has approved the country's Agricultural Strategy (2026-2030), which includes a comprehensive plan to develop the agricultural sector in line with the current economic, environmental, and institutional realities, with a focus on enhancing food security, sustainable natural resources, increasing private sector participation, adopting modern technology and smart agriculture, expanding high-value-added crops, and restructuring some of the less feasible industrial crops.

It focuses on the cultivation of improved high-yielding varieties that are resistant to drought and disease, and the adoption of climate-smart crops, ensuring the optimal use of available resources and achieving sustainable productivity.
