Euphrates level drops by 60 cm in 24 hours

The Directorate of Water Resources in Raqqa announced that the water level of the Euphrates River recorded a decrease of about 60 centimeters since yesterday, until Sunday afternoon.

This decrease in the water level of the Euphrates River comes after the technical measures taken to manage water discharge, especially the closure of the fourth gate of the Euphrates Dam overflow, and the reduction of the quantities of water passing through the Kadiran Dam.

The Director of Water Resources in Raqqa explained that the recorded decrease coincides with the decrease in the quantities of water passing through dams, which was reflected in the water levels in the riverbed within Raqqa province.

He pointed out that the water situation continues to be followed up on the ground by the directorate's teams, and monitoring changes in levels in coordination with the concerned authorities, to ensure a quick response to any developments, and to follow up on the situation of the areas located on the banks of the river.

On  Sunday, the management of the Kadiran Dam in Raqqa announced the reduction of the amount of water discharge through the dam to about 1500 cubic meters per second, as part of the measures to regulate the passage of water imports after the decline in supplies coming from Turkey and the receding of the flood wave.

Decline in water imports from Turkey

Earlier, Minister of Energy Mohammed al-Bashir announced that as water imports from the Turkish side continue to decline, the technical cadres at the Euphrates Dam General Corporation closed the overflow gate No. (4), which contributed to reducing the water passage to about 1500 cubic meters per second.

In a Facebook post, he said: "We reassure our people in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor that the water situation on the Euphrates River is witnessing a gradual improvement."

Al-Bashir stressed that the technical staff continues to monitor the situation around the clock to ensure that water levels return to normal levels gradually.
