On the 29th anniversary of his passing.. Sayed Makkawi's daughter reveals the secret of his refusal to regain his eyesight

On the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the death of the harp of the Orient and the master of composers, Sayed Makkawi, his daughter Amira revealed hidden aspects of her father's life, stressing that he had an exceptional insight that made him reject the "grace of sight" in order to preserve his imaginary painting to the world.

Refusing surgery. Fear of shock from reality

In a moving statement, Amira Sayed Makkawi explained that her father was completely reconciled with his loss of eyesight, so much so that he refused to undergo surgery that would have reconsidered him.

Makkawi justified his rejection at the time with a humorous spirit that hides a human depth, saying, "I imagine the world in a certain way, and I don't want to be shocked by seeing it differently."

Amira added that her father surprised the family one day by accurately describing the shapes of his daughters, even though he never pawned, in a moment that made her mother, who did not know that he was drawing pictures for them in his imagination.

um Kulthum. The "mother" who runs Makkawi's house

Amira went on to talk about her father's "intertwined" relationship with the planet of the East, describing it as going beyond art to the point of "motherhood".

She revealed that um Kulthum would personally intervene to reconcile Makkawi and his wife when there was a dispute, and would sometimes even "abuse" him as her son.

She also recalled a situation in which Kawkab al-Sharq was angry with Makkawi when he was sad for having a female to please his mother, who wished him a son, so um Kulthum could only triumph over the woman and rebuke him for that grief.

"Ya Mesharni"... The Only Melody

Artistically, Amira explained that her father was keen on his artistic dignity, and he never presented his melodies to um Kulthum until she asked for it.

Although the collaboration began with the project of the song "Ansak", which was stopped due to a passing artistic dispute, history immortalized the song "Ya Mesharni".

Amira revealed that the song "Awqati Bethlul" would have been the second collaboration, and Makkawi had already started her rehearsals with Kawkab al-Sharq, but fate prevented this from happening with her death, so he sang it with his voice later and achieved overwhelming success.

A human relationship until the last breath

The daughter of the late concluded her speech by emphasizing the depth of the friendship between the two giants, pointing out that Sayed Makkawi was one of the very few personalities who was allowed to visit um Kulthum in the last days of her illness, which reflects his special place in the heart of the lady of Arab singing, as a loyal friend and artist who has not been born like him in oriental music.
