Milan's hopes of finishing in the top four in Serie A have been dealt a blow after a shock two-goal loss to Sassuolo on Sunday at the Mapi Stadium in the 35th round of the competition.

With this result, Milan's balance was frozen at 67 points in third place temporarily, 3 points ahead of fourth-placed Juventus, who host Hellas Verona later.

Sassuolo raised their tally to 49 points in ninth place, behind eighth Bologna.

Sassuolo captain Domenico Berardi opened the scoring early for the hosts in the fifth minute after receiving a pass from Frenchman Armand Laurenti inside the box, to shoot with his left a creeping ground ball from the right side, which settled into the left corner.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri's battalion received a painful blow in the 24th minute, after the match referee issued a red card in the face of English defender Fikayo Tomori, for the second warning, and the team completed the match with ten players.

Armand Llorente added the second goal in the 47th minute with a right-hand shot from the left inside the area, which settled to the right of French international goalkeeper Mike Maignan, after an exchange of ball with Norway's Christian Thorstedt.
