New medical evidence supports medical negligence hypothesis in Maradona's death case

A new medical testimony during the trial sessions of the medical staff overseeing the care of Argentine football legend Diego Armando Maradona revealed indications that he suffered from a long illness before his death, reinforcing the hypothesis of deficiencies in the health care provided to him.
Seven health care workers (a doctor, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a nurse) have been on trial for the past three weeks in San Isidro for possible negligence that contributed to the death of the Napoli star.
The court in Argentina heard the testimony of an anatomy expert, Federico Corasanetti, who testified via video conferencing, explaining that the results of the heart's autopsy showed the presence of clots between its cavities, a medical sign of long-term suffering.
Corasaniti pointed out that these indicators do not form suddenly, but rather reflect a prolonged medical condition, without accurately determining the duration of suffering that preceded death.
Maradona's possible suffering, which prosecutors claim lasted for several hours according to expert testimony and which the defence denies by some of the defendants, is a key element of the trial, pointing to a lack of care or supervision that the 1986 World Cup champion received while he was hospitalized at home.
In a related context, the doctor touched on the condition of the body when it was found, explaining that the apparent swelling in the abdomen is caused by ascites, which is the accumulation of fluid inside the abdominal cavity, stressing that this condition develops gradually and cannot occur suddenly, which indicates that it can be observed before death.
Death of a heart attack
Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, as a result of a cardiorespiratory attack with pulmonary edema, while recovering in a home health care home north of the Argentine capital.
The trial continues in the suburb of San Isidro, where seven members of medical staff, including doctors and nurses, are facing charges of medical negligence believed to have contributed to the death of the former Napoli star.
