Minister of Energy: Electricity improves after the return of Jordanian gas pumping  and the completion of maintenance

Minister of Energy Mohammed al-Bashir stressed that the resumption of gas pumping through Jordan, maintenance work, and the balanced use of electrical energy have all contributed to supporting the improvement and stability of the electrical grid in most areas of Syria.

Al-Bashir said in  a post on his account on the (X) platform on Wednesday,  April 22, 2026: "We have started to see a remarkable improvement in the reality of electricity in most governorates, as the supply in some areas, for the first time in years, has reached 24 hours continuously."

"We recognize that this improvement has not yet extended to all regions, and we are continuously working to fix faults in transmission stations and transmission lines, especially in the eastern and southern governorates, to achieve broader stability," he added.

On January 8, the Ministry of Energy announced the start of receiving natural gas to generate electricity in Syria, within the framework of an agreement to purchase gas through the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in a quantity of 4 million cubic meters per day.

Jordan: 70 million cubic meters of gas pumped per day

Jordan officially announced, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the resumption of natural gas pumping to Syria in an amount of up to 70 million cubic meters per day after a temporary pause of several weeks.

According to Al-Mamlaka TV, this step aims to support the stability of the electricity system in Syria and improve the service reality of citizens, which directly contributed to the stability of the electrical network, as some areas, especially Damascus, recorded continuous feeding for between 24 and 48 hours for the first time in years.

The resumption of supplies comes within the framework of the agreement for the purchase and sale of gas signed between the two countries at the beginning of 2026, which was suspended last March as a result of regional unrest before it resumed today, and  the two sides are also discussing the possibility of supplying Syria with electricity directly from the Jordanian grid and repairing the electrical interconnection lines between the two countries to enhance cooperation in the field of energy and consolidate regional integration in infrastructure.

Jordanian-Syrian agreement for the supply of natural gas

On January 26, 2026, Syria and Jordan signed  an official agreement for the purchase and sale of natural gas in Damascus, with the aim of supporting the Syrian electricity system, which is suffering from a sharp decline in generation, and the agreement between the Jordanian National Electricity Company (NEPCO) and the Syrian Petroleum Company (SPC), came to establish a daily supply of about 4 million cubic meters of natural gas, equivalent to 140 million cubic feet.

The supply mechanism relies on Jordan's import of liquefied natural gas from international markets through the port of Aqaba, where the regasification process is carried out using the floating unit Energos Force  before pumping the gas into the Arab gas pipeline to the Syrian power plants, including the Nasiriyah plant in the Damascus countryside.

Regional reports indicate that the agreement is part of a broader financing arrangement supported by the State of Qatar with the aim of easing the energy crisis in Syria, while some sources estimate the value of the deal at about $800 million annually.

In the latest developments, the Jordanian-Syrian Higher Coordination Council agreed on April 12, 2026, on a new executive mechanism to resume pumping immediately after a temporary pause, in addition to discussing the possibility of supplying Syria with electricity directly from the Jordanian grid and rehabilitating the electrical interconnection lines between the two countries.
