Liverpool sack Dutch coach Arne Sloat after zero season

Liverpool FC sacked Dutch first-team coach Arne Slott on Saturday (May 30th) after two seasons at Anfield, after the team failed to defend the Premier League title.
The decision came after the defending champions slipped to fifth place in the Premier League with just 60 points, and failed to achieve any domestic championship, despite spending more than £400 million on high-profile deals that did not provide the expected addition, such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.
Pressures within the club have worsened as disputes escalated in the dressing rooms, most notably Mohamed Salah's public criticism of the coach's style of play before his departure from Anfield, as well as the harsh conditions the team went through after the shocking death of Diogo Jota last summer, which the management praised Slott's humane handling of it.
Club owners: A difficult decision
The club's owner, Fenway Sports Group, confirmed in a statement that the decision was "difficult" but necessary to ensure the team's development, noting that Slot will remain part of Liverpool's history after leading the team in his first season to a 20th Premier League title.
"Liverpool Football Club confirms that Arnie Slott will be leaving his position as head coach with immediate effect and that the process of appointing a successor to him is ongoing," the statement said.
"At the same time, we all came to the conclusion that change was necessary for the club to continue moving forward. Again, it must be emphasized that this decision was not taken lightly, quite the opposite."
Record losing streak
Slot, 47, arrived at Liverpool in 2024 as the successor to German Jurgen Klopp, after leading Feyenoord to victories in the Dutch Premier League and the Dutch Cup, to achieve Liverpool's 20th Premier League title in his first season with the club.
But last season saw the team suffer a record 12 defeats, failing to defend their title and contenting themselves for fifth place in the standings, barely qualifying for next season's Champions League.
Coaches nominated to succeed Slot
Liverpool's management moved remarkably quickly following the decision to sack Arne Slott, shortlisting three candidates to start negotiations with immediately, along with some of the biggest names in the background that have not yet been officially on the track, according to media reports.
Sources at the club said that Andoni Iraola, the former Bournemouth manager, who is considered the first choice for the management and has the strong support of sporting director Richard Hughes, who has previously signed him at Bournemouth, indicates that an agreement with him is very close. He is followed by Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeness, who caught the eye after leading the team to qualification for the Champions League with an attacking style based on high pressure and possession. Pierre Sage, the French coach of Lens, entered the list as a distinctive tactical option after his success in domestic competitions.
In the background, other names have emerged that have been linked to the discussion table but are not on the official list, most notably Jurgen Klopp, who was approached by management to consult on the transition, although his return is difficult due to his current position at Red Bull.
Oliver Glassner's name, who is currently available after his departure from Crystal Palace, has also been put forward, along with legend Steven Gerrard, who remains an emotional option that some are counting on to bring enthusiasm back to Anfield.
