Kylian Mbappe attacks France's far-right and ignites controversy

France captain and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has sparked a wave of controversy in France after he made remarks during a lengthy interview with Vanity Fair magazine, in which he criticized the growing influence of far-right currents in the country.

Mbappe reiterated his political positions that he had previously expressed during the 2024 French legislative elections, when he called on French youth to participate heavily in the vote, warning that "extremist parties" are close to coming to power, referring to Marine Le Pen's National Rally party, which is headed by Jordan Bardella.

Mbappe's comments were met with criticism from Bardella, who considered that the footballer, by virtue of his great wealth and "luxurious" lifestyle, is far from the reality of French citizens and their daily suffering, adding that "it is not appropriate for millionaires to offer lessons to those facing economic crises."

Mbappe: I am not detached from reality

Mbappe responded to the criticism by emphasizing that fame or financial success does not mean separation from society or loss of sense of what is going on within it, stressing that players, despite their status, remain citizens who have the right to express their political opinions.

The French star said he was aware of "what could happen to France if these forces come to power", adding that he, like any other citizen, has the right to participate in the public debate and express his position on political issues affecting the future of the country.

The remarks come amid a tense political climate in France, with the rise of the far-right in the political scene, which has once again opened the door to debate about the role of public figures, especially athletes and artists, in influencing public opinion and engaging in political issues.

Sport interferes in politics

The European arena today seems to be facing a new political fashion in which sports players are advancing to the heart of the public debate, going beyond the boundaries of stadiums to spaces of debate about identity, justice and representation, and the  controversy over Kylian Mbappe's statements alone was preceded by another controversy sparked by the appearance  of Barcelona FC Lamine Yamal  carrying the Palestinian flag, in a move that many read as a direct political reference from a player who did not exceed 17.

The case of Lamine Yamal has reacted over the past three days, as  the raising of the Palestinian flag during the Catalan club's celebrations of winning the La Liga championship  has turned into a political event par excellence, opening a European debate about the limits of political expression in sports, the role of young players in shaping the public mood, and even their impact on debates related to identity, justice and international issues.

In this interconnected landscape, it seems that football is no longer just a game, but a platform where symbolic influence intersects with political conflict, where players become influential actors—whether they want to or find themselves in the middle of the storm.
