Jordan withdraws 300 members of Syrian Internal Security Forces

The Ministry of Interior announced on Friday, May 8, 2026, the graduation of 300 members of the Internal Security Forces, after their rehabilitation and training at one of the Jordanian Public Security Centers in Amman.
The ministry said in a statement published on its official IDs that the Jordanian International Police Training Center witnessed the graduation ceremony of a police preparation and qualification course for 300 members of the Syrian Internal Security Forces at the Syrian Ministry of Interior, explaining that these officers "completed an intensive training program in modern police science and work."
The programme aims to "equip participants with modern police knowledge and skills, and to refine their practical and field capabilities, in order to enhance their professional competence and support their readiness to carry out the tasks entrusted to them", she said.
The ministry considered that this course falls within the "track of joint security cooperation", pointing out that it reflects "the depth of cooperation and coordination between the two sides in the fields of police rehabilitation and training".
The graduation ceremony took place in the presence of Syrian Deputy Minister of Interior for Human Resources Affairs Mohammed Hossam al-Sheikh Fattouh, along with Jordanian Public Security Director Obaidullah al-Maaytah and a number of senior officers of the directorate.

For its part, the Jordanian Public Security Directorate said in a statement that the training program included specialized courses in modern police sciences and practical training in physical fitness, martial arts and the use of various types of weapons, in order to qualify the elements to carry out their field tasks in accordance with the approved professional standards.
The statement revealed that the Jordanian side has ensured the full training and material needs of the batch, in implementation of royal directives that affirm Jordan's support for regional stabilization efforts and the promotion of joint security work.
The graduation of this batch coincided with reports indicating the possibility of deploying these forces in Sweida province in the coming period, within the framework of arrangements aimed at enhancing stability on the ground and combating extremist cells and smuggling networks, as part of a common vision to rebuild Syrian security institutions on modern professional foundations.
Unprecedented security cooperation between Jordan and Syria
Syria and Jordan signed 20 agreements and memorandums of understanding in April 2026 during a meeting described by the two sides as the largest joint security meeting in the history of bilateral relations, foremost among which is combating smuggling and border security, with both sides focusing on countering the smuggling of drugs—especially Captagon—and weapons across the common border.
At the strategic-economic level, the agreements seek to secure trade corridors between the two countries, including the protection of transit routes and future rail linkages , which makes Jordan a safe passage for Syrian goods to the Gulf, and Syria a gateway for Jordanian exports to Europe.
The understandings included the restoration of water rights and ensuring the protection of shared water resources, in a step that addresses one of the most sensitive issues between the two countries. This aspect can be followed up through Jordanian-Syrian water security.
