Iranian government settles controversy over FIFA World Cup participation

The Iranian government officially announced on Thursday the readiness of its men's national team to participate in the 2026 World Cup finals scheduled for North America, describing the expected attendance as a "proud participation" that transcends recent military tensions.
Resolving the controversy and confirming participation
Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani has put an end to speculation that Iran will withdraw or be unable to travel to the United States following military events last February. Mohajerani confirmed on state television that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has completed all the necessary arrangements to ensure the team's presence in the tournament, which kicks off on June 11 .
FIFA's position and field preparations
On the technical front, FIFA has rejected proposals to move Iran's matches to Mexico, stressing adherence to the original schedule of matches.
Despite the suspension of the local league due to the conditions of the war, the national team will start a training camp in Tehran with 30 players, and will move on May 6 to Turkey to play 4 friendly matches, most notably an upcoming match against the Spanish national team.
Major Obstacle: "Visa Crisis"
The issue of granting visas to the Iranian delegation by Washington remains the biggest challenge, especially after the president of the Iranian Federation, Mehdi Taj, was previously banned from attending the lottery.
According to FIFA regulations, the Iranian team must arrive at its camp in Tucson, Arizona, no later than June 10, for its group stage matches against New Zealand and Belgium in Englewood, and Egypt in Seattle.
Controversial 'Italian alternative' proposal
Earlier in the day, press reports revealed a surprising political sporting move, as Paolo Zamboli, the special envoy of US President Donald Trump, proposed the inclusion of the Italian team as an alternative to Iran in the tournament.
Zamboli justified his proposal to Trump and FIFA president Infantino with the long history of the Azzurri (four-time champions), who failed to qualify for the third time in a row after falling to Bosnia in the European Annex.
Iranian insistence on presence
Despite these pressures and proposals, Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iranian Football Federation, expressed his full confidence in participation, assuring ISNA that the team will adhere to the specified travel schedule, relying on the promises of FIFA President Gianni Infantino to provide a safe training camp and facilitate the team's logistical procedures.
