Iran announces the return of 3 gas platforms in the South Pars field to production

The director of the oil and gas company in Iran's Pars field, Toraj Dehghani, announced that three offshore platforms in the South Pars field have returned to the production department, after they were damaged by US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

According to Reuters, Dehghani explained that the restoration of the production and processing capacity of the rich gas in this joint field is progressing at a good pace based on the technical capabilities of oil industry experts, noting that 3 offshore platforms have so far returned to work and production.

He added that the implementation of technical and operational plans in the upstream sector, in addition to making the maximum use of the working capacity of the refineries, made it possible to receive and process part of the gas produced from these platforms, which contributed to the return of 3 offshore platforms to the production circuit again.

Feeding refineries sustainably

He pointed out that the rich gas extracted from these platforms is transferred, in coordination with the upstream sector, to other gas refineries in the region, with the aim of optimizing the production capacity of the South Pars joint field, contributing to securing the refineries' supply in a sustainable manner and supporting the management of the national gas network.

Dehghani confirmed that rehabilitation work is continuing at full capacity at the refinery, in conjunction with the continuation of rubble removal operations in refineries affected by the "third war of aggression without stopping", as he put it.

Energy markets expected to calm as Pars resumes production

The return of the three platforms in the South Pars field to production shows remarkable strategic and economic indicators, as experts expect this development to contribute to reducing the geopolitical risk premium and calming global energy markets, given the sensitivity of the field's location in the Arabian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz, and the weight it represents in the gas and oil equations.

This return reinforces the stability of Iran's energy grid, where more than 70 percent of its power plants depend on field gas, ensuring continued electricity supply and avoiding harsh rationing waves.

It allows for  the resumption of vital exports to Iraq and Turkey, where Iranian gas is a key pillar of the operation of Iraq's power plants and Ankara relies on supplies via international pipelines, sparing the two capitals from severe energy crises as summer approaches.

Strategic Importance of the South Pars Field

The South Pars field (known on the Qatari side as the North Field) is one of the most important energy assets in the world, not only because of its size, but also because of its direct role in regional and international energy balances. Its importance is manifested in three main axes:

The field has one of the largest gas reserves on the planet, containing about 51 trillion cubic meters of natural gas, or approximately 10% of the world's total recoverable reserves.

The field extends over an area of approximately 9700 square kilometers, of which 3700 square kilometers are inside Iran's territorial waters, and represents Iran's first energy artery, as it supplies more than 70% of the local gas network used in electricity generation, factory operation, and heating, and feeds gas exports through pipelines to neighboring countries such as Iraq and Turkey
