Hussein Fahmy Awarded "Arab Cinema Personality of the Year"

The Arab Cinema Center (ACC) has awarded Egyptian actor and president of the Cairo International Film Festival, Hussein Fahmy, the seventh edition of the "Arab Cinema Personality of the Year" award,  in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Arab film industry and his ongoing impact on cinema regionally and internationally.

The award will be presented at the Arab Film Critics Awards, which will take place on Saturday, May 16, on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival.

Commenting on the occasion, the founders of the Arab Cinema Center, Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab, said: "This year, we would like to express our appreciation for Fahmy's efforts over the past few years, and throughout his career, to maintain and strengthen Egypt's reputation as a pivotal hub for filmmaking in the region."

Fahmy: I am very happy with this honor

Hussein Fahmy said: "I am delighted with this honor from the Arab Cinema Center, and I appreciate their clear efforts in supporting Arab cinema and exporting our creativity to international platforms, I fully believe that these initiatives are the only way to restore the status of Arab art globally , and it is necessary to ensure that our voice and talents reach everywhere."

 

This prestigious award is given annually by the Arab Cinema Center to honor prominent personalities whose work has contributed significantly to raising the presence of Arab cinema on the global stage.

Hussein Fahmy's selection reflects a remarkable career spanning decades, during which he shaped the cultural and artistic landscape of Egyptian and Arab cinema.

Technical Leadership Roles

Since his reappointment as president of the Cairo International Film Festival in 2022, his second term as president of the festival from 1998 to 2001, Hussein Fahmy has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the festival and strengthening its international standing.

Under his leadership, the festival introduced new initiatives supporting emerging talent, restored the classics of Egyptian cinema, and re-established Egypt's presence in the Marché du Film market through the return of the Egyptian Pavilion, in collaboration with key industry partners.

Fahmy's vision also pushed for the expansion of Cairo Days for the Film Industry, including programs such as the Cairo Film Forum and the Cairo Film Market, fostering links between Arab filmmakers and international industry professionals. His efforts have extended to building strategic partnerships with major film institutions and festivals in China, opening up new horizons for cross-cultural cooperation.

A Rich Artistic Career

In addition to his leading roles, Fahmy is one of the most recognizable actors in the Arab world, with a prolific artistic record of more than 200 works of art in film, television and theatre.

A graduate of the Higher Institute of Cinema in Cairo and holds a master's degree in directing from the University of California, he began his career behind the camera before rising to stardom as a leading actor, and his roles varied across generations and genres, and he contributed to some of the most iconic works in Egyptian cinema.

His films have been widely acclaimed, with several titles included in the top 100 Egyptian  films, underscoring his lasting impact on the region's cinematic heritage.

In celebration of his achievements, Hussein Fahmy is also headlining the latest edition of the Arab Cinema Magazine, which will be published and distributed by the Arab Film Center at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, highlighting the leading figures and trends shaping the Arab film industry, and offering international audiences insight into the region's vibrant film scene.
