Britain's Prince Andrew arrested for public office misconduct investigations

In an unprecedented development in the history of the British royal family, British police have arrested former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, King Charles' brother, on suspicion of misconduct in public office during his tenure as trade envoy to the United Kingdom between 2001 and 2011, in the context of ongoing investigations into his relationship with the late businessman Jeffrey Epstein.

British media confirmed that the police have not officially announced the name of the detainee in compliance with the law, but the information circulating clearly indicates that the person concerned is former Prince Andrew, 65 years old.

Extensive European Coverage

The British press reports that the investigation is centered on the possibility that the former prince passed confidential information to Epstein during his official tenure, in addition to the emergence of new evidence in the "Epstein Files" linking him to the late survivor Virginia Giuffre.

Released under investigation

After about 11 hours of detention, police released the former prince under investigation without formal charges so far, as evidence continues to be collected and documents related to his previous official duties are reviewed.

Royal Palace Stand

The royal palace said it would not comment on the investigation out of respect for the independence of the authorities, but stressed that the royal family was  "fully cooperating" with the relevant authorities, and the development comes at a time when the royal establishment is facing increasing pressure on transparency and accountability.

International repercussions

The event sparked global reactions, with it being described internationally as "the greatest day of disgrace" in the history of the British royal family, while US President Donald Trump called the arrest "very unfortunate and bad for the royal family".

In France, the event was described as a  "historic breakdown" for a prominent member of the royal family, noting that the arrest marks "the lowest point a British prince has reached in modern times", bearing in mind that the case carries political and moral repercussions beyond the borders of the UK.
