Betting Markets . U.S. Soldier Arrested for "Dealing in Confidential Information"

U.S. authorities have announced the arrest of Special Forces Sgt. Gannon Ken Van on charges of exploiting classified military information to make illegal profits through the forecasting platform Polymarket. According to the Wall Street Journal, the case is the first prosecution of its kind, ending years of the platforms operating in a "gray space" between financial markets and betting.

Earnings exceeding $400,000

Betting on the results of secret military operations, most notably the attempted arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro last December, facing charges of cyber fraud, theft of government information, and illegal use of confidential data.

US President Donald Trump described the current situation, saying, "The whole world has become a casino to some extent," expressing his intention to review the use of forecasting platforms by government employees.

However, the case highlights political complexities, with reports revealing that the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., has consultancy and investment ties to Polymarket and Calci, opening the door to serious questions about conflicts of interest within the administration.

International investigation: Manipulation of flight data in France

In Europe, French authorities have opened an investigation into suspected manipulation of temperature data at Charles de Gaulle Airport. The Bureau of Weather Forecasting spotted unusual readings that coincided with a huge $1.4 million bet on the Polymarket platform.

Experts warn that this manipulation could exceed financial profit to threaten the safety of aviation and air navigation.

Internationally, Brazil has taken a decisive step by banning 27 forecasting platforms, calling them a "disguised gamble" that destroys the economy of households. Brazil's finance minister stressed the ban on any financial derivatives linked to political or sporting events, limiting them only to predetermined economic indicators.

The Future of Regulation and the "Wild West Environment"

Although Polymarket relies on blockchain technology that allows tracking the movement of funds, the lack of user identity verification (KYC) on its third-party platform remains a barrier to complex prosecutions.

Economists believe that the Van case represents the beginning of a phase of government hardening to end the so-called "Wild West" environment in the forecast markets, especially with careful betting that preceded military strikes in Iran and major global events.
