Anxiety and caution ahead of Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal clash in the Champions League

Diego Simeone, the head coach of Atletico Madrid, expressed his delight at his side's Champions League semi-finals for the fourth time in 14 years, but did not hide his concern about the strength of rivals Arsenal.
During the press conference ahead of the first leg against Arsenal, Simeone stressed the strength of the opponent and the difficulty of the upcoming match.
Atletico Madrid captain Koki admitted to feeling anxious and nervous ahead of the big matches, explaining that these feelings fade as the match kicks off, while at the same time stressing the team's enthusiasm for this important challenge.
On the other hand, British newspapers have warned of possible tactics that Atletico Madrid may adopt at the Metropolitano Stadium, ahead of the upcoming clash against Arsenal in the first leg of the semi-finals.
The Daily Mirror reported that Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta is concerned about the possibility of manipulating the pitch to affect the performance of his players, noting that such circumstances have occurred in the past during the Spanish side's clash with Tottenham Hotspur in the same tournament.
Reports added that there are significant concerns within Arsenal over the state of the turf, which has been described as one of the biggest challenges ahead of the team in the first leg, scheduled for Wednesday evening.
Tottenham had earlier complained of slippery pitches, which caused serious defensive errors, which led to the team conceding three goals in a short period of the match.
Atletico face Arsenal on Wednesday, seeking revenge after a crushing 3-4 penalty shootout defeat to Real Sociedad after a 2-2 draw in the Copa del Rey final almost a week ago.
The two teams' path to the semi-finals
Atletico Madrid reached the golden square after a difficult crossing against Barcelona, as they carded the qualification card 3–2 in the quarter-finals, benefiting from their first leg win and holding on to the second leg despite the loss. Arsenal, on the other hand, made their way steadily after beating Sporting Lisbon 1-0 on aggregate to return to a major continental semi-final for the first time in years.
History of Direct Confrontations
The two teams have met on 5 previous occasions between continental tournaments and friendlies, and have seen a slight advantage for Arsenal, who have achieved two victories, most notably a wide win with a clean sheet in the group stage of the current edition on October 21, 2025. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid has one win dating back to the semi-finals of the Europa League 2018 when they decided the match with a goal without reply, while two matches ended in a draw, reflecting a clear convergence in the level of previous clashes.
Expected lineup for the match
Diego Simeone is set to push a line-up that relies on Jan Oblak in goalkeeping, and he has a defensive quartet in front of him that includes Molina, Lee Normand, Lenglet and Rogeri. In the middle, Koki appears alongside Jonny Cardoso, while the attacking duo of Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez lead the attack, and Atletico suffer from a notable absence of Pablo Barrios and Jose Jimenez.
Mikel Arteta, on the other hand, is preparing to bring David Raya into the net, with a backline made up of William Saliba, Gabriel, Jurian Timber and Ben White. In the middle, he relies on Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino, while the attacking trio of Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli are led in one of the most effective attacking formations in Europe this season.
