Al-Hasakah Governorate announces the return of 1500 displaced families to Afrin

The deputy governor of Al-Hasakah and spokesman for the presidential team, Ahmed Al-Hilali, announced that a convoy of about 1,500 displaced families from Afrin will set  off on Thursday (May 21)  from the city of Qamishli towards their villages and towns in the Afrin region in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

Al-Hilali explained in a statement to the Al-Hasakah Media Directorate that there are no longer any exceptional security measures related to the return of the people of Afrin, stressing that the remaining of them can return at any time they wish.

A number of Afrin families "preferred to stay in al-Hasakeh province as a result of their connection to their work and their desire to settle in the area", he said.

SDF detainees released before Eid al-Adha

Regarding the file of the SDF detainees in the state, Al-Hilali revealed that a final census has been conducted for them now, in preparation for their release before Eid al-Adha.

He pointed out that the concerned authorities in the state are continuously following up on the file of detainees deported to the Republic of Iraq, while the competent authorities are completing the legal and logistical procedures related to their return to Syria.

2600 families return to Afrin

The first convoys for the return of displaced families from Al-Hasakah province to their original areas in the Afrin region and its villages in the eastern countryside of Aleppo province were launched after the January 29 agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF at the beginning of last March, and the convoy included 400 families at the time after years of displacement in Al-Hasakah province.

At the beginning of last April, the second convoy set off from the city of Qamishli, north of Al-Hasakah, with about 200 families of displaced people in Afrin on board. The third convoy set off on April 14, from the city of Al-Hasakah, and includes 800 families from the people of Afrin and its villages, while the  fourth convoy set off on Saturday, May 8, 2026, and was  the largest in  number and included 1200 families from the displaced people of Afrin and its villages.
