A high-level Syrian delegation from the Ministry of Energy participates inthe World Energy Forum in Washington

The  Director of Government Communication at the Ministry of Energy, Ahmed Al-Sulaiman, announced that a delegation from the Ministry, headed by Minister Mohammed Al-Bashir, is preparing to participate in the World Energy Forum in Washington, D.C  ., scheduled to be held on June 9 and 10 in Washington.

Al-Sulaiman explained in a post on  the X platform  that this participation represents an important opportunity to represent Syria, build new partnerships, review investment opportunities and rehabilitate the energy sector in a way that supports development and economic recovery.

On May 4, Al-Bashir participated in the work of the trilateral ministerial meeting held in Amman, with the participation of his counterparts from Jordan and Lebanon, to discuss strengthening cooperation in the fields of natural gas and electric energy, and developing regional connectivity projects.

He stressed at the time that the meeting comes as a continuation of the existing cooperation path, noting that joint efforts contributed to the rehabilitation of parts of the Arab gas pipeline and the extraction of quantities of gas through Jordan, which supported the stability of the electrical network in Syria, according to what the Ministry of Energy published through its official accounts.

Holding a series of meetings in Washington

In this context, sources in the Ministry of Energy said that the official delegation will hold a series of high-level meetings with officials in US government institutions, in addition to extensive meetings with leaders and heads of international and American companies specialized in the fields of renewable energy, oil and gas, and development investments.

According to the source, this official participation aims to review the promising investment opportunities available in the Syrian energy sector, convey a realistic and up-to-date picture of the potentials and capabilities of this vital sector, in addition to exploring the prospects of future coordination with international actors and economic decision-makers.

Global Forum Agenda

The International Energy Forum (IEF) is the world's largest gathering of energy ministers and the world's leading international platform that brings together energy-producing and energy-consuming countries alike, with the aim of promoting dialogue and stabilizing global markets.

Officially established as an intergovernmental organization with the aim of coordinating oil and gas policies, the forum is headquartered in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and focuses  mainly on bridging the gap between oil and gas producing and consuming countries (such as OPEC countries and the International Energy Agency), and searching for common ground to prevent sharp price fluctuations that harm the global economy.

The forum aims to ensure safe and stable flows of supplies and protect energy infrastructure around the world, particularly in vital sea lanes and straits.

Scope of Membership and International Significance

The forum includes more than 70 countries, including the world's largest energy producers and consumers (such as the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the European Union).

The member countries of the forum represent more than 90% of the total global oil and gas market (production and consumption), giving it more political and economic weight than any other sectoral organization.

The forum's meetings (such as the upcoming one in Washington) will feature critical discussions focusing on major shifts in the international landscape,  such as balancing the energy transition and addressing the  transition to renewable and clean energy (solar, wind, green hydrogen) without compromising traditional energy security, and ensuring that there are no supply shortages.

The     forum provides a platform for developing countries or countries going through reconstruction (such as Syria) to present investment opportunities in their damaged infrastructure to major international companies and international funding funds.

Shared Data Initiative (JODI)

One of the most significant practical achievements of the World Energy Forum is its oversight of the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (JODI), a large, regularly updated global database that provides accurate and transparent figures on the volume of global oil and gas production, exports, and inventories, helping investors and decision-makers predict market movement and avoid sudden crises.
