A convoy carrying 1300 families from the displaced people of Afrin leaves Al-Hasakah

1300 displaced Afrin families  have returned to their original areas in the northern countryside of Aleppo, as part of the ongoing returns carried out under the supervision of the presidential team in charge of following up on the implementation of the January 29 agreement.

The Al-Hasakah Media Directorate stated that  the convoy of families set off from the city of Qamishli, under the supervision of the presidential team and the Internal Security Command in Al-Hasakah and Aleppo provinces, and accompanied by the Syrian Civil Defense teams, amid organizational and logistical measures to secure the movement of families to their areas.

The convoy includes families who resided during the years of displacement in the cities of Qamishli, Amuda and Al-Malikiya, before starting the return journey to the city of Afrin and its villages and environs in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

Abdi: Expectations of the departure of the two convoys of return later

Mustafa Abdi, a member of the presidential team, said that about 1,300 families will move "safely" to their areas, under the supervision of the presidential team and the assistance of the internal security forces and Syrian civil defense teams.

Abdi added that the transfer of displaced people from Afrin province to their areas is continuing, noting that this convoy is the sixth cohort within the current return plan.

He explained that there are "one or two other regiments" that are expected to set off later towards Afrin, before moving on to the stage of transferring the displaced people of the city of Ras al-Ain from the cities of al-Hasakeh province to their areas of origin.

For his part, Ibrahim Haftaro, a member of the Afrin Social Association, said that the convoy included more than 1,000 families, whose number exceeds  5,000 people, heading towards the city of Afrin and the various villages and suburbs affiliated to it.

Haftaro added that the convoy consisted of more than 50 buses, in addition to about 300 trucks dedicated to transporting luggage and furniture, considering it the largest return convoy that the region has witnessed in the recent period.

The return process is taking place within arrangements and arrangements aimed at facilitating the people's access to their areas, he said, after years of displacement and suffering.

Afrin families refuse to leave Al-Hasakah

In a statement on Wednesday (May 20th),  Hasakah Deputy Governor Ahmed al-Hilali said that there are no longer any exceptional security measures related to the return of the people of Afrin, stressing that the remaining of them can return at any time they wish.

A number of Afrin families "preferred to stay in al-Hasakeh province as a result of their attachment to their work and their desire to settle in the area", he said.

Regarding the file of the SDF detainees in the state, Al-Hilali revealed that a final census has been conducted for them now, in preparation for their release before Eid al-Adha.

He pointed out that the concerned authorities in the state are continuously following up on the file of detainees deported to the Republic of Iraq, while the competent authorities are completing the legal and logistical procedures related to their return to Syria.

2600 families return to Afrin

The first convoys for the return of displaced families from Al-Hasakah province to their original areas in the Afrin region and its villages in the eastern countryside of Aleppo province were launched after the January 29 agreement between the Syrian government and the SDF at the beginning of last March, and the convoy included 400 families at the time after years of displacement in Al-Hasakah province.

At the beginning of last April, the second convoy set off from the city of Qamishli, north of Al-Hasakah, with about 200 families of displaced people in Afrin on board. The third convoy set off on April 14, from the city of Al-Hasakah, and includes 800 families from the people of Afrin and its villages, while the fourth convoy set off on Saturday, May 8, 2026, and was the largest in number and included 1200 families from the displaced people of Afrin and its villages.
