Violent escalation on the ground hits the Ukrainian and Russian capitals

The field arena witnessed a grinding military escalation and a large-scale exchange of missile and air strikes between Kyiv and Moscow throughout the night.

Ukrainian media sources reported that the capital Kyiv was subjected  to a renewed attack last night with violent ballistic missiles that caused huge explosions and flashes in the sky, while local authorities in Moscow announced the interception of a wave of suicide drones that were heading directly towards the airspace of the Russian capital.

This new round of direct field fighting reflected the determination of both sides to move the battle to sovereign political and military centers, resulting in casualties, civilians and widespread injuries on both sides.

Russian Depth Shelling

The Ukrainian military authorities announced the use of their FP-5 Flamingo long-range cruise missiles to launch a qualitative strike that targeted deep into Russian territory, explaining that the shelling hit the famous Russian weapons factory "Titan-Barrikady" located in the city of Volgograd.

Ukrainian Telegram channels confirmed that at least two direct strikes took place on the large industrial complex, which is widely believed to be involved in the production of vital components for the Oreshnik ballistic missile system and launch pads used against Ukrainian cities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video on his social media accounts documenting the flames rising from the facility, stressing that every Russian defense complex contributing to the war is a legitimate target for Kyiv's long-range weapons.

Targeting of  Ukrainian energy facilities

Russian forces targeted the production facilities of the Naftogaz Group, Ukraine's largest national oil and gas company, as part of a barrage of intense air attacks concentrated in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions.

Ukrainian media quoted the air force as saying that the Russian attack involved the use of 129 drones, 113 of which were shot down or obstructed by air defenses.

On the other hand, the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) announced that its drones succeeded in striking the Russian oil pumping station "Vtorovo" for the second time this June, pointing out in initial reports that the technical buildings of the vital facility that supplies fuel to Moscow and is used to export oil products through the ports of the Baltic Sea were hit.

The current battles coincided with President Zelensky's announcement of a 40-day military pressure plan aimed at crippling Russia's supply systems, military infrastructure, power and oil plants deep in Crimea, with the path of Washington-sponsored peace negotiations in full stalled without reaching any formal political agreement on the horizon.

Victims of Battlefield Battles

A number of civilians have been killed and wounded as a result of mutual artillery and aerial shelling on both sides of the border, with Oleksandr Ganja, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Military Administration, reporting that one person was killed and two wounded as two neighbourhoods in the area were hit by more than 30 Russian drone and aerial bomb strikes.

In the Sumy region to the north, military governor Oleg Grigorov confirmed that a 66-year-old man was killed in an attack on a house, as well as 10 others were wounded in a separate massive attack.

Ukraine's state emergency service said widespread damage was caused to infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia after 9 people, including two children, were injured and a high-rise apartment building was damaged. On the Russian side, Yegor Kovalchuk, the governor of the Bryansk border region, reported that two people were killed in their car in shelling by a Ukrainian drone.

Denis Pushilin, the Moscow-appointed governor of Donetsk, also announced that two people were killed in the towns of Horlivka and Makiivka, while Russian news agencies quoted the Ministry of Defense as saying that 124 Ukrainian drones were shot down over different areas, including 24 planes intercepted by the defenses of the capital Moscow, according to its mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.

Emirati mediation for prisoners

The defense ministries of Moscow and Kyiv confirmed on Friday the success of a new prisoner exchange that included the release of 160 military soldiers from each side, in the latest humanitarian step and a tangible diplomatic breakthrough.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the return of fighters detained since 2022, posting photos of them, while the Russian Defense explained that its released soldiers were transferred to Belarusian territory to receive the necessary medical care.

Official reports pointed to the pivotal and consistent role played by the UAE in facilitating and making this deal a success through Abu Dhabi diplomacy, as an extension of previous successful mediations that included the exchange of 205 prisoners in May and 314  prisoners last February, so that this file remains one of the rare channels of practical cooperation between the two warring countries.
