
It raises the risk of cancer by 9%. Study warns against sitting continuously

A recent medical study showed that sitting continuously for long periods of time significantly increases the risk of developing and dying from cancer, stressing that exercising in the "gym" may not intercede for a person if he spends the rest of his day sitting in a chair.
The researchers found that every extra hour of continuous sitting during the day was associated with a 9% increased risk of dying from tumors, placing prolonged sedentary behavior at the forefront of contemporary health threats.
Data analysis of 91,000 participants
The researchers analyzed large data from 91,292 participants from the UK Biobank database, where volunteers carried precision physical activity monitors over seven consecutive days and then followed up for an average of 12.38 years.
The study categorized human activity into prolonged sedentary behavior (sitting for at least 30 minutes consecutively without moving) and intermittent inactive behavior (less than 30 minutes or interspersed with motor activity), to understand the difference between total and normal sitting hours.
Closely linked to cancers of obesity and diabetes
The field results of the study proved that prolonged inactive behavior was associated with a sharp increase in the incidence of cancers in general, and cancers associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes in particular, such as cancers of the esophagus, liver, kidney, pancreas, colon, breast, ovary, and thyroid glands.
In contrast, intermittent inert behavior had the exact opposite results, as it was associated with a reduced risk across all vital markers thanks to periods of motor rest distributed throughout the day.
The study revealed a simple preventive equation, in which replacing just one hour a day of continuous sitting with light physical activity (such as walking or standing) was associated with a 12% reduction in the risk of dying from cancer. The researchers explained that this pattern has a definitive biological explanation, as experiments have shown that cutting out long periods of sitting with short, repetitive movements contributes to improved metabolic responses, burning fat, and controlling blood sugar compared to continuous stability.
Lack of guidance
The research team noted that global health guidelines are overly focused on moderate or vigorous exercise, while these results show that light movement is gaining parallel importance that should not be ignored. Although the researchers acknowledged that there were limitations in the study in the form of health bias of UK Biobank volunteers and the absence of sedentary context data (e.g., work or driving), they stressed that the progress of research and clinical trials will soon help develop more personalized and effective strategies to break down sitting periods and protect communities.
