The US Republican Party is experiencing a very sensitive and complex political juncture on the eve of the midterm elections for Congress, following a violent shock that hit the pillars of its leadership in the Senate, represented by the sudden death of prominent Senator Lindsey Graham at dawn on Saturday, coinciding with the appearance of his veteran colleague Mitch McConnell due to a mysterious health ailment that forced him to bedridden, which opened the door to major questions about the future of the current US administration and the fate of the parliamentary majority.

Republicans currently hold a slim majority in the Senate by 53 seats to the Democrats' 47, but the vacancy of Graham's seat and McConnell's critical position threaten to shrink the margin to 51-49 if the Democrats manage to snipe the two seats, which means complete legislative paralysis and a hard wall in front of the package of laws that the ruling party seeks to pass before the August holiday, foremost of which is the Voter Eligibility Protection Act (SAVE America) and the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)), in addition to 10 bills for additional funding needed to avoid a government shutdown by September.

Declining support and Vance's warnings of impeachment

The record blows come at a time when President Donald Trump and his party are facing a significant decline in public satisfaction levels against the backdrop of tensions related to immigration, hot tariffs and the war on Iran. The latest polls published by the New York Times yesterday showed that Trump's approval rating has fallen to just 39%, while 58% of respondents expressed sovereign dissatisfaction with the overall performance, compared to about 50% in February 2025.

In light of these alarming numbers, US Vice President J.D. Vance, the leading presidential candidate in 2028, issued a stern warning to the Republican inside, stressing that President Trump may face impeachment proceedings and formal impeachment if the Democrats succeed in grabbing additional seats in Congress.

He was shared by House Speaker Mike Johnson, who warned that the Democratic wing would turn entire congressional committees into parliamentary investigative bodies targeting the president, his family and aides if they could dominate the chambers.

Vacant seat conflict

Under the laws in force, the political street is waiting for Graham's seat in South Carolina, where Republican Gov. Henry McMaster will appoint an interim replacement until early 2027, while the party has set Aug. 11 for a special primary.

McConnell's camp is facing mounting pressure in Kentucky, where Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear has called for immediate disclosure of the senator's true health to end the rumors, amid uncertainty surrounding the incident since he was transported by paramedics following a cardiac arrest last month.
