The Saudi-led military coalition in support of the recognized Yemeni government has vowed to respond with unprecedented firmness and force to any attempt to target the kingdom's security or violate Yemeni sovereignty, following direct threats from the Houthi movement.

In a statement issued on Saturday, July 4, the official spokesman of the coalition forces, Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, warned against harming the vital interests of the Kingdom, stressing that the recent escalatory rhetoric reflects a relentless effort by the group to shuffle regional cards.

Accusations of exporting internal crises

Houthi threats against Saudi Arabia are nothing more than a blatant attempt to divert attention from the group's grave violations against the Yemeni people, al-Maliki said.

The coalition spokesman accused the group of continuously seeking to export the economic disasters and livelihood suffering it has caused in the areas under its control, in addition to trying to divert attention from the escalating state of popular and tribal rejection it faces locally, at a time when armed groups have continued to target international shipping and trade routes in the southern Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The Iranian Plane Crisis

These accelerated developments on the ground came after the military spokesman of the Houthi group, Yahya Saree, threatened to target Saudi airports and vital facilities in the event of a repeat of what he described as the penetration of Saudi planes into Yemeni airspace .

The group's air defences on Friday forced Saudi warplanes to back off after trying to prevent an Iranian civilian plane from landing at Sanaa International Airport, Saree claimed, noting that the plane was carrying more than 200 stranded and sick passengers, marking the first announced Iranian flight to Sanaa in nearly a decade.

Emergency presidential action in Yemen

Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the security and political implications of the incident, describing the arrival of the Iranian flight as a "flagrant violation" of national sovereignty and a blatant violation of international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.

The Council called on the United Nations and the international community to immediately move towards taking "deterrent measures" towards Tehran to prevent these illegal flights and to support the stability of legitimate institutions.

The collapse of the truce plans and the positions of the Houthis

Although the UN-sponsored truce in April 2022 officially ended in October of the same year, the fronts maintained relative calm and a decline in direct confrontations between the coalition and the Houthis.

In a speech on June 25, Ansar Allah leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi reiterated his rejection of the continuation of what he described as the "economic war and the US-Saudi blockade", pledging to take action by all means to end it, and calling for public mobilization and the opening of training camps to face the current challenges.
