54 people injured and 18 others missing in explosion inside Qatar's Ras Laffan factory
The Qatari Ministry of Interior announced at dawn on Monday, June 22, that 54 people were injured and 18 others were missing, as a result of an internal explosion that occurred in one of the factories in the Ras Laffan Industrial Zone located in the north of the country.
In an official publication broadcast on its account on the "X" platform, the Ministry explained that the initial data and investigations indicate that the explosion occurred as a result of a sudden technical malfunction that occurred late on Sunday evening, stressing that the competent security and medical authorities immediately began activating rapid response protocols to fully control the repercussions of the field incident.
Rescue teams on alert
The Qatari International Search and Rescue Group of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), in cooperation and direct coordination with the Civil Defense teams, has launched extensive combing and search operations to trace the fate of the 18 missing people under the rubble of the damaged structure of the factory.
The Ministry of Interior reassured the public and workers that the internal explosion was contained with high professionalism and did not result in any gas or chemical leakage that poses a risk to the safety of nearby individuals or vital facilities, indicating that the medical teams succeeded in evacuating all the injured and transferring them to hospitals to receive the necessary medical care while the technical units continue to examine the causes of the malfunction.
The strategic importance of the city of Ras Laffan
Ras Laffan Industrial City, located about 80 kilometers north of the capital Doha and spanning a vast area of 295 square kilometers, has been the strategic and key onshore base for the processing and liquefaction of natural gas extracted from the North Field, which is classified as the world's largest single non-associated natural gas field with proven reserves exceeding 900 trillion cubic feet.
The city has attracted significant international and domestic investments worth more than $120 billion, as it has the largest international liquefied gas export facilities and manages exports through which more than 90% of QatarEnergy's exports to global markets with a production capacity of 77 million tonnes per annum (MTA), giving it a pivotal role in stabilizing global energy markets through its state-of-the-art ports with 33 specialized jetties.
The name of Ras Laffan Industrial City has been associated with severe geographical and security tensions in the region over the past few months, as QatarEnergy announced on March 19, 2026, that the liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities and the gas-to-liquids plant were subjected to Iranian missile attacks, which resulted in the outbreak of fires and serious damage, in the context of the consequences of the US-Israeli-Iranian war.
Emergency response teams succeeded in containing these damages last March without recording any human injuries, and the current technical incident in June put the city's security system in front of a new field test to ensure the safety of the infrastructure.
Ras Laffan has brought together mega facilities for the production of multiple bio-derivatives, including the Laffan Condensate Refinery and Jet Fuel, the Ras Laffan Helium Plant, one of the largest helium facilities in the world, and the strategic Ras Laffan Petrochemical Park, which aims to raise Qatar's petrochemical production to 14 million tonnes per annum.
Most of these microoperations are digitally managed via satellite-connected monitoring and control centers that ensure the highest environmental safety standards, making the mobilization of rescue teams in the latest incident a testament to the speed of logistical response to protect workers and maintain the pace of production.
